DeShawn Blanding

Biological Engineering major DeShawn Blanding concluded his yearlong term as Southern region vice president of the National FFA with an electrifying speech.

The South Carolina native delivered his retiring address at the 90th annual National FFA Convention and Expo, an event held Oct. 25-28 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Among the messages he shared with the audience was the importance of hope

“Hope is believing that there is a plan and a future for our lives,” Blanding said. “There is another lesson that will be better. There is another chapter that will be better.”

For the past year, Blanding has traveled the country, visiting FFA chapters, hosting state and local conventions, and meeting FFA members. He led personal growth and leadership training conferences for FFA members and met business, government and education leaders. His election as a national officer of FFA made him one of only six African Americans to achieve that distinction and the first from a HBCU.

The Student Perspective: Students Travel to World Pork Expo, Iowa State University

This trip to Iowa was eye opening and different. The first couple of days of the trip we went to the World Pork Expo. This was a nice experience as my colleagues and I went to different booths to speak to many companies about their products. I learned so much and even wanted to incorporate some of the products at our farm. One of the products I was interested in is a vaccine gun that vaccinated with air pressure and no needle. It’s also attached to a larger contraption that can make castration a lot easier for swine. My colleagues and I stopped to speak to a man named George Eanock, the CEO of Osborne Livestock Equipment and Pig Farming Supplies, and he gave us an enlightening conversation about life and simplified the way of thinking. He was very impressed with us but I was more impressed with him.
