Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T Awards Three Team Members

Congratulations to Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T's 2026 Award Winners!

Nutrition educator Shewana McSwain won the Innovation and Creativity Award for her leadership through the Fresh & Local program;

Personnel coordinator Meyonda Watkins won the Professional Excellence Award for her dedication to professional success;

Natural resources specialist Biswanath Dari won the Collaboration and Partnership Award for creating transformative collaborations between research, Extension and communities.

The  awards were presented at Cooperative Extension's summer staff meeting.

Kevin Barnes ’82: ‘A&T was a huge choice for me’

Growing up on a tobacco farm in Wilson County, all Kevin Barnes wanted to do was leave. “We lived out in the country, on a farm, and my father seriously believed in hard work,” Barnes said. “We farmed tobacco, corn, soybeans, hogs, cucumbers – a little of everything. It taught me to find something else to do. I wanted to get out.”

Here’s the Scoop: The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences asked students in Professor Roy Carter’s visual arts classes to design a logo and a name for the N.C. A&T Creamery, opening this year. After learning a bit about the dairy and the process of making the ice cream, the students put their design and typography skills to work to create some amazing designs!

M. Ray McKinnie ’76 has been selected to lead Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T as the associate dean/administrator, effective Jan. 1. McKinnie served as dean of the College of Agriculture at Virginia State University and as the administrator for Virginia Cooperative Extension from 2016 - 2022.
