N.C. A&T’s early childhood educational facility, the Chlld Development Laboratory, a part of the Dept. of Family and Consumer Sciences, has earned the highest marks from the state for a seventh straight year.

The facility received zero violations during a recent licensing compliance visit, a thorough evaluation to ensure that a facility meets all state or local regulatory standards. These often-unannounced visits review critical aspects of the operation, such as staff-to-child ratios, health and safety measures, and the building’s physical environment, to ensure a clean, hazard-free, and child-friendly space. Inspectors also check staff qualifications, observe daily routines, and scrutinize documentation to verify that everything aligns with best practices and legal requirements.

“Achieving zero violations for seven years is a rare and remarkable accomplishment in the childcare industry,” said Jawan Burwell, Ed.D., the center’s director. “This success suggests the facility consistently upholds high standards and a culture of excellence, driven by diligent staff, strong leadership, and a proactive approach to compliance. Such a record reflects not only a commitment to meeting regulatory standards but also to going above and beyond, fostering an environment that prioritizes safety and quality care.”

Currently, the Child Development Lab serves 34 children in two classrooms. The program plans to expand its capacity, reflecting growing demand and a commitment to maintaining the high standards that have contributed to its success.

Joshua Loftin, a graphics artist in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences’ communications department, and his wife, housing professor Sung-Jin Lee, Ph.D., said that they are pleased about the learning environment their daughter, Chloe, is a part of as a student in the four-year-old class.

“We love that our daughter is exposed to so many educational benefits at the Child Development Laboratory,” Loftin said. “Dr. Burwell, the teachers, Family and Consumer Sciences faculty and students create a welcoming and engaged learning environment.

“We love it when she says she is an Aggie Pup!”
