Students go for the green in fall ‘Adopt-a-Pot’

December 12, 2023

Students position themselves in front of the plants their choosing during the Adopt-A-Pot event held at the Reid Greenhouse on the campus of NC A&T State University. Students, staffers and supporters of Sustainable Land and Food Systems, the Reid Greenhouse and the Student Farm joined to make the occasion successful.

Students, faculty, and staff in and out of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences planted this season’s leafy greens during fall 2023’s Adopt-A-Pot.

Taking place each semester, guests lined up outside the Reid Greenhouse had the option to select from a wide variety of fast-growing plants, including mustard greens, kale, spinach, and bok choy, to grow in mulch pots provided by student workers and volunteers.

“We basically take care of the plants that our guests will be planting,” said Odile Huchette, Reid Greenhouse director and lecturer in sustainable land and food systems. “We water them, care for them, and in a couple of months, we encourage everyone to come back and pick up their veggies for side salads.”

Genesis Thomas, a sustainable land and food systems major, called the event “a great opportunity for everyone to see what we do on a day-to-day basis as ag majors.”
