Arnab Bhowmik, an assistant professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design, will share his expertise in sustainable agriculture and greenhouse gas emissions during two Earth Day programs this week.

He will serve as a panelist following a virtual screening of the film “Kiss the Ground,” which describes the potential of regenerative agriculture to help address our climate crisis. The event, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, is hosted by Zero Waste NC. Register for the event through EventBrite.

Bhowmik also will be part of the university’s Earth Day panel discussion – “Environmental Justice, Equity and Sustainability: Earth Day Imperatives” at noon Thursday, April 22. The event will feature opening remarks from CAES alumnus Michael S. Regan, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

CAES alumna and former NC AgrAbility leader Crystal Kyle, now a U.S. Department of Agriculture NIFA biological scientist, has been honored as one of the year’s 27 Women Veteran Trailblazers. Her groundbreaking research is strengthening agricultural education programs that help veterans heal from the physical and mental wounds of combat.

The award announcement cites her work with Enhancing Military Veterans Opportunities in Agriculture (AgVets), Military Families Learning Network (MFLN), Department of Defense Virtual Lab School (VLS), Clearinghouse for Military Family, Readiness Military Reach, Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program, Family Advocacy Program (FAP), Army New Parent Program, AF Medical (Mental Health Division), JBSA Substance Abuse Program, Early Learning Matters Curriculum Platform, SBIR 8.12 Small and Medium Farms, 1890 Extension Research Teaching Center of Excellence Evans Allen and 4-H Youth Military Partnership & Outreach.

“The women Veteran trailblazer initiative highlights the experiences and contributions of women Veterans and shares their stories about how their military service and experiences led to their continued roles as leaders and advocates in the communities where they live and work,” said Acting VA Director for the Center for Women Veterans Elizabeth Estabrooks.

Horticulture lecturer Odile Huchette, winner of the university’s 2020 Community Engagement Award for Community Engaged Teaching, is featured in a recent video by Ponytail Ag.
